Lets get started. First of all this is not going to be a step by step
construction guide. I am only going to present the pictures I took during
my build along with what I hope to be helpful narrative. You are pretty
much on your own.
Lets review some specifications:
Wingspan 62 inches
Wing Area 710 Square inches
Fully Symmetrical Airfoil
Fuselage Length 55 1/2 inches
Engine size 60 two stroke 90 four stroke
Weight 7 - 7 1/2 pounds Mine ended up a little over 8 pounds.
Find some clear space to work. You need a nice flat building board
large enough to accomodate the wing panels and fuselage. I used a
ceiling tile on top of a piece of 3/4 inch MDF.
Be assured that my building table does NOT often look like this.
It usually has a mound of "stuff" piled in the center.
Can't build a thing without a set of plans.
Order up a set from RCM Magazine.
Its Plan Number 1048.
Yes...RCM is still in business. The magazine has ceased publication
but the book store and plans service is still operating.
The plans come as two sheets. Sheet 1 contains the fuselage and
fuselage formers while sheet 2 contains the wings and stabilizer.
My set came as a set of blue prints and are very detailed.
The plans come with a copy of the construction article originally
published in the August 1989 issue of RCM along with a bill of materials.
Start gathering up the wood you will need. This is a large plane
and takes a lot of wood. The picture here shows what I used to build
my Ultra Sport. I had lots of scrap and pieces left over.
Note the stack of wing ribs in the front. I had already cut them out when
I decided to start taking pictures of the build.
